I've been using GCC 4.2 on a PPC machine for some time now, and I used
LLVM-GCC 4.2 on it for a while, as well. I can find nothing in the Xcode 3.1
Release Notes that suggests 4.2 can't be used to build universal
applications. The section headed "New gcc-4.2 and llvm-gcc-4.2 Compilers"
says only that gcc 4.2 and llvm-gcc-4.2 will not compile code against the
10.4u or earlier SDK.

If you're aware of documentation to the contrary, please post a link.
