instant you use a 1.5 client with a 1.4 working copy, that working copy is upgraded to 1.5 and can no longer be managed with a 1.4 client.

This is getting a bit OT but for the record:

If you use the 1.5 svn command-line client to update a sub-directory of a 1.4 working copy then you'll end up with a 1.4 root and 1.5 sub- tree in your working copy, i.e. a 'mixed' working copy. Worse, the root level working copy folder is still marked as 1.4 format but can only be opened with a 1.5 client.

This may not be normal scenario but it can happen.

The only way around it is to always ensure that the entire working copy is updated.

Yes, my previous solution works, but I wanted to not use it :-)

I have since tried on a clean system (I have several mixed 1.4/1.5 working
copies) and it seems to work correctly.

FYI, there is no such thing as a "mixed 1.4/1.5 working copy". The instant you use a 1.5 client with a 1.4 working copy, that working copy is upgraded to 1.5 and can no longer be managed with a 1.4 client.

Of course! I meant that some of my working copies were still using 1.4, and others were 1.4 copies upgraded to 1.5. If I checkout using 1.5, it seems to work properly.
