Can I turn the question around?
What are the compelling reasons why gcc 4.2 is to be preferred to the
default gcc 4.0?

How about with Tiger users? Do the applications work there, too?
I'm not sure how this got moved to Cocoa-Dev. Moving it back to the
original
list.
The release notes say:
Note that neither gcc-4.2 nor llvm-gcc-4.2 will compile code
against
the
10.4u or earlier SDK, or deploy for Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier.
We compile with 4.2, with end users running our product under
10.4/10.5. Note that it isn't a supported configuration though... all
our customers that used to be able to run our application on G3
processors are now left out in the dark.
