To jump to the conclusion, the culprit was Syntax Coloring.
Turning off these preferences on and off had NO noticable effect:
-- predictive compilation (Building > Use Predictive Compilation)
-- indexing (Code Sense > Indexing)
-- taking all network volumes out of doc and other paths
-- distributed builds were totally off
Turning off Syntax Coloring made a huge difference, near-instant
open vs. 45 seconds of spinner. It was suggested by monitoring Xcode
with Shark.
When discussing issues like this, please also include:
- The version of Xcode and Mac OS X you're using.
- The machine configuration you're using it on.
- Some reasonable characterization of the project; e.g., "a small
Cocoa project," or "a C++ project with heavy use of namespaces and
templates, and files 10,000+ lines long."
Performance always has a context. Syntax coloring performs quite well
in a lot of cases, so it's very useful to characterize the case you're
running into in a way that Apple can attempt to replicate in
development and testing.
