Using XCode 2.5 solved the original problem but now i can no longer
use the gcc compiler from the terminal.
It seems as if upgrading to Leopard and/or installing XCode 2.5 would
have changed a lot more then expected.
Can someone help on what needs to be done to also have the fully
development environment when running in a terminal session?

This is what OSX report when trying to start XCode:
You need to use Xcode 2.5 or Xcode 3 on 10.5.x; install one of these
and use it with your project; 2.5 is basically the same as 2.4.1 as
far as the tools go...
