Problems attaching debugger

Whenever my application crashes while being run in Xcode (OS X 10.5.4, Xcode 3.0), I get the "loading program into debugger" message for a minute or so and then the program just exits without anything being displayed in the debugger or any useful console messages. This is most annoying. This works fine for other projects, but not the one which I actually want to work on. Any ideas?
