Hi, Jason,

I first must disclaim this with an alert to my own lack of knowledge. I know nothing of the internals of Apple on the matter of secret projects. I also know little of compiling for other platforms. But I do know a teensy bit, partly from threads in the past, about some things.

I think that this might be another long thread of speculation. :) The real answer to the "top-secret Xcode" is that it's possible, but no one except Apple knows, and they're unlikely to talk about it, based on their history. There may be good reasons to keep it secret -- we might speculate on sales, potential loss of the Mac OS X market share, the need for more third-party integration if they release it, etc.

We might also refer to the past history of what was called Yellow Box (some info is on the page <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocoa_(API )>). Others may provide pictures -- but here's one that may interest you: <http://andrewme.users.sonic.net/img/OSE.jpg>

My understand with regard to the move to LLVM is that Apple was having difficulty getting bugs patched due to inertia in the GCC project -- but I know few details. I suspect that it may serve a dual-purpose though, much as the move to Intel: problems with the present supplier (as speculatively mentioned) and (as you suggest) a position of independence that might bring future products and projects into existence.

Well, that's enough rambling from me for now. I suspect that I've strayed slightly off-topic at points -- but, as you say, 'tis early. :)

Cheers,
	Andrew

Hi All,

I have been experimenting with come projects compiling with GCC vs the Intel Compilers. The Intel Compilers seem to produce a smaller executable and graphic type apps seem to draw faster. I know this is vague.

But what about LLVM? I have not heard of this much in the past (just off and on) and now that it seems Apple is moving away from GCC in favor of LLVM, what should developers do?

Are there advantages of LLVM over GCC?

Any advantages of LLVM when needing to compile for OS X, Windows, Linux, Solaris, etc? (as I sometimes do)

Is Apple investing in LLVM a sign that maybe there will be more PC apps from Apple? Does Apple use Visual Studio for iTunes and Safari? Or does anyone think they might have a hidden XCode for Windows that might debut someday? (This would be great in my opinion!!)

Thanks a bunch everyone, since it is 4:05am I should hit a Starbucks now....

-Jason
