Glad to hear you're on the road again!

Just a guess, but it is possible that the problems you had in the past, running backup software, may have occurred because that software temporarily tweaks various directory permissions, while it is doing its thing, to lock things into a known state. And then it is supposed to set the perms back when finished, but it may have crashed in the middle, leaving the perms messed up.

Anyway, it doesn't matter, just a thought...
