Rick. Thanks for your suggestions. I am associated with PSU, but this
is one of my home machines that acts as the server for the rest of my
machines on the network. It isn't a server in the formal sense; it's
just that the router is connected to it.
I have no idea where those directory settings came from. When I dig in
very deeply, I discovered that the settings were from the ~/Desktop
itself. I recall sometime back, not long after the Leopard compatible
version of Carbon Copy Cloner came out that ccc was returning my
~/Desktop in an unstable condition, basically where I was unable to
write to the desktop. Because of that, I stopped using ccc and
switched to SuperDuper! and haven't looked back. I'm beginning to
think that the "777" representation on the ~/Desktop was from the
residue of the ccc mess. Perhaps in one of the resetting permissions
the ~/Desktop got reset to 777 by either SuperDuper! or "DataBackup"
one of the other programs I tried. In the meantime, following all the
regular responses, coupled with some off-line responses, I've now
"chowned" the ~/Desktop back to "marc" and everything seems to be
working correctly now. I looked at one of my other machines where I'm
the sole owner and that's the way the directory structure is there. I
hadn't tried any XCoding on that machine and so I was able to verify
that machine worked fine.
Onto the next lesson. Many thanks for everyone's help and suggestions.
It never occurred to me that the ownership of the ~/Desktop would come
into play here. I had forgotten about that problem from so long ago
that until people started pointing out the "777" I couldn't for the
life of me think of how that might have gotten changed to begin with.
In any case, it is now fixed and all the other little problems have
vanished along the way.
