The Problem you had, is clearly stated in the "iphone_sdk_download_readme.pdf". just read the last paragraph...

But who reads Readmes? ;-)

I do, actually. You are right that the final paragraph of that readme listed the 32 bit issue. I did see this readme, but I also saw the 'About iPhone SDK' pdf that was installed with the kit, and I guess I just mentally merged the names into one. So I read one and not the other; I didn't realize/notice that there were two. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
