Disregarding any legal hair-splitting as to whether an HTML checkbox is a legally binding contract, and regardless of whether the wide availability of "unofficial" sources constitutes a "de facto" public release, I think an NDA has the same moral authority as any other promise or agreement. Keeping one's promises may well be old- fashioned, but I don't think it's stupid. Quite the opposite, in fact - I think it's the smart thing to do. NDAs are fairly ubiquitous these days, and I don't see how establishing a record of disregarding them could possibly be good for one's business prospects.

And bear in mind that the Apple engineers who are in the best position to answer the questions which have been raised (and who, from my experience, *want* to answer such questions) have something stronger than an NDA to deal with. Apple may or may not take legal action against a third party who violates an NDA, but an employee who does the equivalent can reasonably expect to get in serious trouble.

I understand the frustration. I share it, since I'm not in the iPhone group and don't get told anything either. At the same time, I recognize that Apple has the right to withold information and I'm contractually obligated to honor that. (I'd consider myself morally obligated, in any event.)

The Apple engineers who frequent lists like this aren't from DTS. We hang out here because we want to help people. (And Mac OS X and Xcode are complex enough that we can learn stuff, too.) And we don't have much voice in setting corporate policies. Complaining to us if you think something is making it harder for you to develop for the Mac or iPhone doesn't do any good. File bugs wherever possible, or talk to DTS. Trust me, this makes a *much* bigger difference.
