Once I had some bad ram in a Windows box that I was using as a router.
It mostly worked fine, except that large FTP transfers through the
router would get corrupted. Replacing the ram fixed it.
The bad ram was detected by Memtest86, but only for one particular
test. The BIOS POST didn't find any problem.
So your files might be getting corrupted by a piece of hardware
between you and apple.
