Are there any good reasons to upgrade from Xcode 3.0 to the latest one even if you are not doing iPhone dev?

Have there been some good bug fixes, and features added for normal use?

Or are there downsides that make it not worth the trouble?

I'm unable to discuss prerelease products available under NDA on a public list, but I'll give you some generalities.

As of Xcode 2.5 you can install multiple copies of Xcode side by side, so you don't need to "upgrade." You can continue to use your existing tools even after installing new tools. So you can try out a beta version for things it's appropriate and useful for, but not lock yourself in.

The Release Notes for any version you download and install will tell you in detail what it's good for, what features it has, what bugs are fixed, and what known problems exist.

There's a tradeoff in using a Beta. On the plus side, it will have bug fixes, performance enhancements, new features, and let you do new things. It also gives you the chance to provide feedback to us ti make sure the features work for you when the final version is released, and to ensure we didn't introduce regressions that that break your workflow. On the minus side, it's by definition not finished, so there will be bugs.

I always recommend that people download and install Beta versions, to see if bugs they care about have been fixed, and to let us know whether we introduced regressions that broke their workflow. Our general time between releases is 6 to 9 months, so you'll get better turnaround if you report a regression in the Beta cycle rather than waiting for the final and then having to wait until the next release to see if it's fixed.
