Internal error using ibtool to compile symbolic link xib

When I try to use ibtool to compile a nib file from a file that is a symbolic link to a xib file, the following error results:

/* com.apple.ibtool.errors */ Internal Error: Description: -[NSFileWrapper regularFileContents] *** this method is only for regular file type NSFileWrappers

What can be done so ibtool can successfully compile from the symbolic link?
