That was it. Don't recall clicking it consciously (but, obviously,
DID click it...), and never knew what grouped was for anyway.... now
if I could only remove it from the toolbar.
So that fills my "learn something new every day" quota... :-)

You must have clicked on the Ungrouped/Grouped toolbar item in the
editor toolbar. This controls the behavior that you've described.
