project template question

I inherited an Xcode project that has lots of targets.
I am modifying the GUI section/target of the project.
This Xcode project was initialized with a Cocoa application based
template, I want to convert it to a Cocoa Document-based project.
I would like not to start the project over as it will be very time consuming
to recreate all the individual targets that are in it - and my only interest is
in the GUI target which is small at this point.

Is there a way to do that? a way to convert a
project automagically? or by hand? And how? Can it be as simple
as replacing the myapp.h and myapp.m files with mydocument.h and mydocument.m
files?

Yes, I am new to macs and xcode.
