The fact is that, just as in any other area of typography, there are dozens of typefaces to choose from*, with different pros and cons, and people have very personal reasons for liking or disliking them. It's trivially easy to change the font, so just set it to whatever you like best and it'll stay that way forever.

Agreed that the font preference discussions are a waste of time (at least here). I'd have given you the last word, except that you made me go investigate Menlo widths a little more systematically, with the result that I have to eat my words. So for the record ...

a. It looks like the character widths in Menlo are almost (or perhaps exactly) the same as for Monaco, in 10, 11 and 12 point sizes. This includes the weirdness that 11 and 12 point have almost (or perhaps exactly) the same widths as each other. Anything I earlier said that suggested the contrary was a misperception.

b. The character sizes (roughly, the glyph outline bounding boxes) in Menlo are very similar to Monaco. At 10 points, ignoring the anti- aliasing, the character shapes are fairly similar at the pixel level (although the overall effect is somewhat different). Anything I earlier said that suggested the contrary was a misperception.

c. Mostly, what is different between the fonts is that (perhaps due to Menlo 10 being rendered with anti-aliasing that's not present in Monaco 10) the counters (interior white spaces of the characters) are significantly narrower in Menlo, which gives the font a rather condensed look at that size.

So it wasn't those Apple kids on my lawn after all. This time. ;)
