I had this problem with an old .pbproj, but after I renamed the project to have the .xcodeproject extension Xcode found it, recognized that it was out of date and upgraded the format.

Note that this isn't a supported upgrade. It's conceptually similar to renaming a .jpg file to .gif and hoping that the application that loads it figures out and deals with the situation.

It worked with a few different projects, including a IOKit sample from Apple, so I don't think your comparison is valid. I didn't open the file with a random application that knew about .pbproj, I opened it with Xcode.

If the formats are that different, and there was *no* support for the upgrade built in to Xcode, then it wouldn't have worked at all. Saying it's not supported isn't the same as saying there's no code in there to do the conversion.

Admittedly it would be safer to do it from supported format to supported format. That would require maybe one extra conversion, right? Because at some point Xcode *did* support conversion of .pbproj files as the expected case. But how many people keep multiple old copies of Xcode around?
