interface builder question

I'm a newbie so please bare with me. When I drag the "Navigation Bar" item from the library to my window, I only see the bar with a "Title" string. How to I enable and see the other optional buttons like "Back", etc.? I've searched the documentation endlessly and have come up short. thanks, Mike
