Hi,

Yes, I've read the same reports and would tend to agree and likely a
software constraint. What matters is the kernel and in OSX 10.5 this is
still 32bit. This normally limits memory to around 4G which is what you
are seeing. For the 17in macbook pro (and other mac pros) to support
more, then are presumably running some sort of LBA kernel, which
performs various tricks to allow more ram to be accessed by the OS
(although a single process is still limited) ?
I've also read that 10.6, when it comes out will switch to a 64bit
kernel, where possible, which will naturally allow all 64 bit capable
machines to access a lot more than 4G out-the-box. At this point my
guess is the 4G limit might be lifted on current 15in macbook pro
machines, but this is pure speculation.
I would say, if you can wait until 10.6 comes out and see what that
brings...

The thing about 10.6 it will be only available on 64-bit processors (i.e. Core 2
Duo's). So 1st Gen MBP will not work with it. (i.e. another reason to upgrade
the computer)
