Here's a URL that shows the pane, and the monitoring capabilities should be plain (Figure 6-3).

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/developertools/Conceptual/XcodeBuildSystem/800-Reducing_Build_Times/bs_speed_up_build.html

It looks like a pretty old screen shot, though, which is why I'm unsure what Xcode 3 has in this area.

Yeah, that pane is still there, and for me, it is empty. Though like I said in the original email, if I trash the preferences file and go to that panel, a number of hosts quickly get listed and them removed from the pane.

The first question to answer is what version of gcc and/or distcc is installed on the other machines. In particular, if they have not been upgraded to the same version of Xcode as your controlling machine, then you should at least try one experiment of upgrading one remote machine and see if it becomes available for distcc.

The build machines have xcode 3.1.2 and os x 10.5.7. I had hoped that maybe there was a way to confirm the problem is version mis-match without going through the process of changing versions and then testing. Like maybe a way in xcode to say "hey, here's a hostname - can you distribute to it?" But I've spoken to our build farm admin, and he's said he could upgrade one to 3.1.3, so I guess I'll try that. The reason this seems weird to me is because there are other people on the same subnet as me with, say, xcode 3.1 who are able to distribute builds fine, so I thought maybe the version requirements were tied to gcc/distcc version and not xcode rev.

Also check that nothing has disabled distcc's capabilities, such as a possible firewall or Sharing setting becoming disabled. It might be something simple, like the upgrade of Xcode caused its status to change in the firewall access-control list (System Preferences, Security, Firewall, IIRC).

Firewall is all open. Are there any useful diagnostic tools for distcc? I haven't been able to find any.

Thanks,
