It usually append when you tell Xcode to read the file as UTF-16, but
the file is actually UTF-8.
Open the file info in Xcode to check which encoding is selected.
Try to change it and make sure to click "Reinterpret" and NOT convert
when Xcode asks you what to do (make a backup copy of the file before).

beginning got messed up or removed somehow (maybe a bug in Xcode?),
which has the effect of swapping the high-order and low-order byte for
each character, which can in turn make normal characters render as
Chinese or other incorrect characters as well.
