A quick google shows me that book was published in 1996.

True?

If so, I can't imagine any advice about using pre-compiled headers for a product and platform that didn't exist at that time would have much bearing Xcode/OS X Leopard.

That's not to say the suggestions about header inclusions and standalone compilation aren't good. I haven't read that book but arrived at the same conclusion.
