Does anyone know why this happens.

The workaround is trivial but annoying -- either

Never actually seen that, but there actually are such things as nameless files in Unix systems (like OS X). They continue to exist as long as some program has them open. This leads to the question: have you tried the alternative work-around of waiting a bit longer and retrying the compress? Or, say, using Activity Monitor to make sure that Xcode really has quit, before trying the compression?
