I think you are correct about this. IIRC, this happens only when I immediately try to compress after closing Xcode.

Never actually seen that, but there actually are such things as
nameless files in Unix systems (like OS X). They continue to exist as
long as some program has them open. This leads to the question: have
you tried the alternative work-around of waiting a bit longer and
retrying the compress? Or, say, using Activity Monitor to make sure
that Xcode really has quit, before trying the compression?
