IB Beach balls while opening a XIB

I've been mocking up a window in IB over the last week. Yesterday evening my Mac was fairly low on RAM so I closed a few apps. Among them was IB which had my mockup XIB open. IB closed properly as far as I could tell.
This morning IB beach balls indefinitely when I try and open the XIB. I've tried opening it from Finder and Xcode. I have also re-started Xcode just in case but this doesn't make any difference.
I have also tried opening other NIB and XIB files and get exactly the same behavior, so (thankfully) I don't think this is related to my mockup XIB. If I start IB from the Dock then IB presents the template chooser window correctly but then beach balls as soon as I select a template.
Does anyone know how I can get IB working again?
