There has to be a Makefile in the current directory for 'make' to work.

Have you used Unix tools like 'make' before? If not, there are plenty of books and tutorials available. (Or you can type 'man make'.) Since you've already gotten the tool installed, this list isn't really the right place to discuss the use of generic Unix commands.
