I thought this might be related to Xcode 3.2 SDK issues, upon closer inspection the system_profiler changes by release and you have to review the XML files it generates or risk your parser blowing up.
Ideally, it would be nice if Apple would keep the ProfileSystem popen ->system_profile example up to date and document backwards compatibility issues.
I posted this thread on the compatibility forum where it belongs if anyone is interested in following up.

It might be a build option as this code works on 10.3 - 10.5. Anyone
know of a fix, or do I need to rewrite the code that was based on this
example?
I just downloaded it, built it, and launched it on 10.5.8, it crashes there too. Sean
