Cannot add model version

Hi,
After working a while back, xcode will not allow me to add a new model version to my data model. so far I have tried the following:
0- completely uninstalled Xcode; then reinstalled latest version (3.2.3) - same as previous
1- created a new dummy project with a minimal model; when I selected Add New Version to a single version mode, xcode created a MyDocument.xcdatamodeld bundle which appears in xcode to be empty (and in fact only contains the .xccurrentversion file) and leaves the existing MyDocument.xcdatamodel as is.
2- logged on as a test user (with admin privileges like myself); I copied the original project into this users desktop and opened it in Xcode. I was able to add a new version with no problem. Xcode seemed to be fine.
At this point it appeared to me to be a problem with my regular user preferences, settings, etc. So, I tried to remove everything from ~/Library and below that looked vaguely like it belonged to Xcode. This had no effect and I am now stumped.
Are there other files and/or directories that I need to move aside in order to really get a clean Xcode? Anything else I could try?
Thanks,
Martin
