Indeed I had not checked the target setting. I set that, but I still get the "Build SDK Missing" in the Build panel.
Just a minute... I just now restarted Xcode ofter changing the Target setting, and now the Build panel has "4.2 | Debug | Proj334 | armv7" I'm in business again!
Thanks!!

I clean all targets, click on the Info icon, and select "Latest iOS (currently set to iOS 4.2)". The Build panel still says "Base SDK Missing". I restart both my iPad (4.2.1) and iMac (10.6.5) and bring both back up again. Xcode still says "Base SDK Missing" and the Info setting is still on "Latest iOS (currently set to iOS 4.2)". So I reinstall Xcode 3.2.5, still no joy, same beef.
