Not always. If your builds are I/O bound (which,
when using a file server, they are) then it doesn't help that much. I
observe build times about 50% longer using 1 parallel build task versus 2
(on a dual-core Intel CPU). Not crashing my Mac more than makes up for
this. I find Activity Monitor useful for monitoring the efficiency of the
build process - observing the CPU usage tells you how I/O bound you are. I
get around 35% with my current setup, whereas I get 100% on a local file system
(with 2 parallel build tasks, both cores fully utilised).

Don't have / don't want (no other use for, too many boxes
/ cables / kWH already). I might try the Windows
AFP server route sometime though. If it is any good I will post my
findings back here (probably in a new thread). But it annoys me that they
charge hundreds of dollars for a single-server package. A piece of
software like that shouldn't cost that much.
