No, static libraries won't help, but dylibs will. We had the same
problem in our code base (2500 .o files), and separating stuff into
dylibs (currently around 50 of them) was the only thing that helped.
(We do that only in the debug build of course.)
I'm not sure if the total build time from scratch is different, but
after editing just a couple of source files, turnaround times are much
faster.
