Just to report back - I did try getting the Open AFS server to
run on my XP box and failed miserably. They do say in the
release notes that he Windows server is 'Not supported',
'Experimental' and 'Do not store any data that you cannot afford
to lose' so the omens were not good. After a series of
nonsensical error messages from the admin utilities and an offer
to reformat my NTFS partition, I gave up. I might try one of
the paid-for options, depending on how miserable I find life
using SMB.

Paul Sanders.

Thanks, that looks very interesting. I didn't know it was out
there. I'll look into it when I have a moment and report back.

There's another, free, option: OpenAFS (http://www.openafs.org).
It generally works well both on Mac OS X and Windows (we use it
our department), although I'm not sure how difficult it is to
set up the server side.

There's one bug in the current Mac client that may or may not be
a deal breaker though: if you try to process a largish static
library that resides on an AFS volume with ranlib, then ranlib
crashes with a bus error (there's some bug in its handling of
writing to mmap'ed files).
