I'd put the blame on GCC. Linking C++ quickly is certainly possible, as
proven by a certain discontinued toolset. (Dead-stripping virtual methods is
also certainly possible, as proven by a certain discontinued toolset.) And
so on.

I personally don't expect the problems to really go away as long as Apple's
using the GCC tool chain--although they have certainly worked to improve
things over the years, and those improvements are *much* appreciated. I hope
to see LLVM replace GCC in Xcode sooner rather than later.
