Jerry,
It sounds like perhaps you installed the Xcode package from the Mac Dev Center. If you're working with iOS you need to download and install the Xcode + iOS SDK package from the iOS dev center. Xcode and the iOS SDK are tied together and cannot be upgraded separately.
I recommend deleting your current Xcode install and reinstalling using the Xcode & iOS SDK package from the iOS dev center.
