External monitor code can be debugged in the simulator, but connection
related problems apparently cannot. I have verified reception of
connect/deconnect messages by sending my own messages to a temp view in the
main screen. If the monitor accidentally disconnects and is reconnected, I
attempt to reestablish and reconfigure everything, using the passes-in
screen parameters, but to no avail (blank screen, monitor indicates "no
signal"). This also happens if the iPad goes to sleep ( I have given the
user a "sleep inhibit" option). Re-launching the app works, but is a
less-than-ideal, disruptive solution.
Steinberg/Freeman's iPad book states that this is "unreliable across
developer applications (as well as with some of the built-in applications,
such as YouTube)", leading me to believe it is either a system software or a
hardware issue (or maybe just a dumb developer issue). However, Keynote
seems to accomplish it without problem, leading me to rule out hardware
issues.
Has anyone successfully been able to establish a screen reconnection in a
running app? If so, any wisdom you can impart? (I may file a support
incident on this otherwise.)
