Well, the best is a combination.
The difference between an MBP / Mid 2010 with SSD, 8 GB Ram + RamDisk for build temp files vs. an MBP / Mid 2008, original slow HD, 4 GB makes in a heavy C++ project a build time difference of 3:35 min vs. 32 sec with Xcode3 / gcc
OTOH, Xcode 4 is barely unusable on the Mid 2008 MBP, pretty much like Xcode 2 on an PPC Laptop - Y..o..u... c..a..n..w..a..t..c..h.. letters appear (mid-size project with Obj-C only)
