I've now clicked the button several times for various docs in
Xcode 4.1 and it has not failed yet.

Ahh, the login window… That confused me for a while. It wants your
Mac admin login password, not any password related to your developer
account at apple.
Then check your preferences. The issue with not being able to download
docs was resolved. Try a "get" again if they haven't been automatically
fetched.
