Jocelyn,
> This is the xcode-users mailing list, not cocoa-dev, so I believe this is exactly the right list for Xcode-related issues, and considering the amount of concerns and frustrations expressed, I'd say this is becoming a serious issue for enough people.
Sorry. I was reading cocoa-dev seconds before changing to xcode-users and got confused, I think.
> You seem to be blindly forgiving of Apple in their decision process, but I will personally wait for their rationale before accepting it offhand... assuming we ever hear it (Apple is quite taciturn).
Not really "blindly". I won't bite this and start a flame war, but I'll just finish by reiterating that "five bucks" is pretty reasonable. Most people that really want to develop software for the Mac or iOS already are members of one of the paid developer programs, which are also much cheaper than they used to be years ago. The trade-off is acceptable for me. This is all I have to say.
>> The other thing that bugs me a lot is this "what's next" or "for how long" attitude. Come on, people! Why would Apple start charging big bucks for the apps all of a sudden? Photo Booth and FaceTime are being sold for a symbolic price, IMHO. Xcode isn't any costlier. I don't see any reason for all this frenzy!

I don't agree with it. I just accept it. Maybe I am just stupid, because I still pay for software, music, books and movies. Or maybe I'm lucky to afford it...
>> Finally, I want to state my opinion that if the $5 tag on Xcode will keep lousy wanna-be-developers from entering our platform, I'm all for it. I can count myself in this category, but I don't sell my crappy code to anyone...

I will not talk about these lousy wanna-be-developers, risking another flame war. Case closed for me.
I agree that the "fee" (not "tax") may be deterrent. In this case, it only hurts Apple. They chose this path and they'll have to suffer the consequences.
I don't think it will stop anyone from experimenting with Mac OS or iOS development. If I am right, one was never allowed to try developing for iOS. I mean, to download the iOS SDK, you had to pay the $99,00!
Cheers,
