Hi,
The $5 is just pocket change, it's really about the principal of
charging. What does the $5 get you? For instance is this a one-off
charge for XCode until the end of time? IOW, will there be charges
for updates? What happens when XCode 5 is released? etc.
Only this is not the problem. Do you really believe the Apple
platforms have issues with lousy wanna-be developers?
Yes, definitely! Maybe not on the Mac, but on iPhone/iPad there is a
whole world of "wanna be" programmers. I worked at one place where
there was a contractor making £300 per day and he was totally inept!
He told us over lunch one day that he used to be a plumber but
decided to "have a go" at programming the iPhone. He bought a used
Mac Mini for around £200, $99 for the developer program and a couple
of iPhone books, in total it cost him between £300 to £350. He then
just copied bits of code from the books, sample code from Apple and
from the various iPhone web sites. When he submitted his app it was
rejected, but he just kept fiddling with it and re-submitting it.
After many iterations of this it was eventually accepted. Then the
iPad came on the scene and they was a shortage of iOS developers and
he managed to bluff himself into a £300 per day contract on the basis
he had an App in the AppStore! It cost the company big time though,
after 6 months working on an application, it eventually made it onto
the App Store, even though it had *massive* memory leaks and crashed
all over the place. When version 2 was scheduled, it had to
completely re-written, because the code was so badly designed and
badly formatted. When I compiled it the first time I got over 1200
compiler warnings!
Since then I've come across 5 or 6 iPhone developers that were
totally clueless, the best one of all was when I told one of them
about a crash due to an object being over-released sometimes. Five
minutes later she said they'd fixed it, when I asked how, I was told,
"oh I just put a retain on the object!" The fact that it now leaked
most of the time just went totally over her head!
Instead of charging $5 for XCode Apple should charge for vetting the
capabilities of a potential developer before letting them loose on
the world!
I shouldn't moan really, since it keeps me in work!
Dave
