My main machine is a MacBook Pro but even though I could attach a second monitor to it, I've never done it. It's a 17" and I've learned to live (and appreciate) it. So, no matter where I go, I know I have everything on my screen. I sometimes do but I use Spaces extensively. Mail is in one space, Safari is in another, Xcode yet another and I switch very quickly with Control + the number of the screen I want. Since I always put Mail and Safari in the same space number, it's easy to remember. I guess you could say that I'm kinda using additional monitors, even if they are virtual :-)
