Add one more vote for multiple window UIs. Being restricted to panes
is one of the things I dislike about Visual C++. On the Mac side I
have lots and lots of windows open while working, positioned according
to my own whim. I much prefer to use the Xcode 3 editor even when
working on Visual C++ projects.

Are we going to be required to use xCode 4.0? I don't mind the

I totally agree, the $5 isn't a problem. IMO the interface is
horrible! I can't stand having everything in one giant window. I
have 3 monitors on my MacPro and even when using my MacBook I
usually attach a second window, with XCode 3.x I can arrange
everything nicely so I can see more than once source file at once
and still have a debugger window open. I have never enabled the
"one giant window, with lots of separate panes" on XCode 3 and it is
scary to think that I might be forced into using it under XCode 4.
Being forced to have everything in one window to be is a giant step
backwards and stinks of Windoze!
I, for one, like the new interface design. I've always used the "all-
in-one" since Xcode offered this layout. My main machine is a
MacBook Pro but even though I could attach a second monitor to it,
I've never done it. It's a 17" and I've learned to live (and
appreciate) it. So, no matter where I go, I know I have everything
on my screen. I agree that they could maybe have had some kind of
layout preferences like the previous version but, I just wanted to
mention that some people like the new layout...
You never need to look at more than once file at once or look at email
or the web while looking at a source file?
Yes, a preference good.
The thing that really gets me is why dumb down the interface when in
the previous version all was well? It seems to me that Apple are
trying to pander to the consumer market for the Mac and are forgetting
about the creative end of the market. Most of the Graphic Designers
I've met have configured their Mac to be as pane-less as possible,
(e.g. in the Finder) and still use multiple windows. As for engineers,
most of the Mac people I know use multiple windows in XCode (e.g.
simple view) but most of the newbie iOS engineers tend to stick with
the default configuration out of ignorance of anything better. They
look at my machine in amazement - I'm much faster at navigating then
they are using default config, I think that maybe 5 out of 20 newbies
I've met over the last 2 years or so have adopted the "simple view"
approach after I've shown them now to set it up.
Cheers
Dave
