I would recommend to add it to the SCM, as long as all developers who share your SCM would profit from using this workspace.

Don't you mean "as" (=because) instead of "as long as" (=if) (don't want to nit pick, but it changes the meaning of what you say).

If you like to, read "as". You may also imagine situations where developers A, B, and C can profit from the workspace, while developer D should only have access to one of its sub-projects.




Can you give any example on how it can ever add anything? I have not been able to get anything in there different from the default value. Xcode projects (not workspaces) always have exactly one project anyway, and you cannot add more to them (except as cross-projects in the old fashioned way, but they won't turn up in project.xcworkspace).

No, I haven't tried it myself. I just read the documentation about it. ;-)
