This is a major conceptual beef I have with the new Xcode 4 paradigm. Those of us who have used Visual C++ know that when you use a 'caged windows' app, no amount of screen real estate is enough to comfortably do what you want, whereas the simple desktop paradigm, where you can have as many things as you like up, allows for unlimited growth (up to a practical limit, of course). But the 'caged windows' scenario only allows up what the UI wants to present to you at that time.
It's frustrating, not because of "the way it used to work has changed" psychology, but because something essential has been taken away -- the freedom to develop the way you like. Developing is a personal, creative process and can't be straightjacketed into one workflow or another, as my limited experience with Xcode 4 seems to indicate it's trying to do. Xcode isn't a user app, but it seems like it's been rewritten as a user app.
