I think there is, I think the App Store needs it to be able to update it. I've heard of people who couldn't update to 4.0.1 because App Store couldn't locate a previous installation (i.e. the installer for 4.0).

Not sure what you mean. There's no 1-to-1 relation in general. You should read the transition guide.
