I still haven't updated to the Xcode4 release but in the preferences there are settings to open or close panes/tabs based on certain events (alarms?) - there might be a setting to close the debug pane ofter your program finished running.

Bjoern, there is actually a related setting in the preferences, and it works :)

Hi Andreas,

Open a New Window in XCode 4, hide everything but the Console (and I think the Locals pane). As long as you don't close that window the console will update. You'll then just need to flip between the main window with your editor and the one with the console. Also make sure you start and stop your app from the main window, not the console window or things get interesting.

I did try this, and it works, too. This is a good way when a separate window for the console output is desired.

Thank you both for replying!

I hope that this discussion implies that I can replicate in Xcode 4.0 those console-related features that I rely upon in Xcode 3.1, to wit:

+ when I hit 'Build & Go' in my project, the Console opens in a separate window
+ the contents of the Console window are retained between application runs
+ I can open, close, and clear the Console window at will
+ I can have the Console window, the project management window, and windows displaying source & header header file content positioned anywhere I desire across my multiple-monitor extended desktop (often interleaved with windows displaying content from other apps). This may represent 'clutter' to some folks, but for me it's a marvelously productive work environment.
