I’m pretty certain that’s the first time I’ve ever heard the words monstrosity & BBEdit in the same sentence...

I’m not impugning BBEdit as a whole. It’s a great editor [though I’m a TextMate man, myself] but its preference UI is really, really cluttered. (Or was a few years ago when I last used it.) Which may be OK or even desirable in a developer focused app, but it’s exactly what you don’t want in an end-user app.

My favorite example of this was when I switched from Outlook Express to Mail in 2000. It had taken me about four hours of tinkering off and on to get OE to work properly with an IMAP server, and I actually wrote up an internal memo detailing all the steps to set it up. When I set up Mail, it basically Just Worked™ with IMAP once I entered the account settings. While OE gave me tons of control over bells and whistles like folder subscriptions, it wasn’t set up with defaults that did what people would actually want.

Anyway, sorry for going further off topic, I just didn’t want to leave the impression that I was hatin’ on BBEdit.
