I've finally had some time to read about the new entitlements that Apple wants to push by March 1st, 2012, and I have some questions.
I've been distributing a synchronization tool on the Mac App Store for several months now and it's became my biggest source of income. Now, reading the documentation about entitlements, it looks like my app will be removed from the App Store if I don't support entitlements but, OTOH, I can't see how I can implement any of them and keep my app functioning. I haven't seen any entitlement that would provide the kind of access that a synchronization tool needs. Now, I don't want to just simply pull it from the App Store and want to explore ways I could still retain some functionality. Specifically, I see that there is one entitlement "com.apple.security.files.user-selected.read-write" that applies to files that are selected in the open or save panel. My specific question is whether this also applies to folders, even though the documentation specifically mentions "files". I'm thinking that before doing a sync, I could annoy the user with an open dialog that would already have the folders he wants to synchronize selected in the dialog so that I would respect that rule. I know it sounds a bit clumsy and I know it will definitely annoy the users but I don't see any other way around it. I understand the need to make the system more stable, safe and reliable, but a lot of tools will disappear from the App Store, or make users go through those unnecessary hoops to achieve the same functionality. Selling my tool shows me that there is a demand for such a tool but with the entitlements that Apple proposes at this time, it's going to remove those tools from the users. I know I can keep selling my app independently from the App Store but I don't reach as many users as the App Store does, based on the number of sales I had before the App Store and the number of sales after the App Store. What worries me more is that at a later point in OS X evolution, there is no telling that Apple could make software available on the Mac only through the App Store, like on iOS…
Anyway, any suggestion gladly accepted for my problem.
-Laurent.
