Using Exit Status of RunScript Actions

Can we use the exit status of a run script anyhow on order to conditional proceed with a build phase?

For example, I would like to check if a certain environment variable (a path to a directory) is set before I start to compile:
Build Phase Pre-Action (bash):

if [ ! -d "${XXX}" ]; then
echo "ERROR: directory '${XXX}' does not exist!"
   exit -1
fi

Redirecting the error message into Xcode's build transcript would be a nice addition, too. Currently, it will be logged in the system console, which isn't that useful IMHO.

Any ideas?

Regards
Andreas
