Koen,
Before you can add an item to a toolbar, you must first add it to the toolbar's list of allowed items, which are the items the user can put in the toolbar. Click the toolbar in IB to open the sheet with the list of allowed items. Drag the search field to the list. After dragging the search field to the list of allowed items, you can add it to the toolbar. _______________________________________________
